It is plain indeed that in spite of later estrangement Hobbits are relatives of ours: far nearer to us than Elves, or even than Dwarves. Of old they spoke the languages of Men, after their own fashion, and liked and disliked much the same things as Men did. But what exactly our relationship is can no longer be discovered.

A full Moon in domestic Cancer early on Christmas morning brings an emotional a high tide. Whether we celebrate the holiday or not, all our hopes and fears around the joy or trouble of family, home and homeland can course through us like reindeer through the night sky. We may long for true family as this full Moon illuminates our heart, though our relatives may look like elves, dwarves, and hobbits to us. If we can accept their strangeness, rather than wish they understood us better, we’ll be more successful in finding them intriguing. This is also true of people from faraway places and people with very different politics than ours. We are all related, even if what exactly our relationship is can no longer be discovered.
A very magical but confusing semi-square between Mercury and Neptune on Christmas morning can either leave us a little weepy or willing to let the sugarplum fairies dance in our heads. This is a lovely combination for those who wake up in the bosom of a healthy family, safe tucked safe in their own home, with no major troubles in sight.
For those for whom this is not an option, or for those whose this is not their holiday, we can ride the crest of these feelings, honor the ache and the memories, and let them flow through like snowflakes passing by the window. Let’s not get attached to any one thought or memory, because we’re processing so much of the world’s feelings as well as our own on this full Moon morning.
A helpful meditation will be to explore the concept that who we are is enough, what we bring to the table matters. No matter what a difficult relative or our inner critic might say. Mercury trines optimistic Jupiter on Christmas afternoon which brings a celebratory note and can help us stay more in the present with one another.
Uranus turns direct late on Christmas day after many months retrograde and deals out some unexpected, unusual, or mobilizing wildcards. Crazy stuff comes out the closets. So does Aunt Edna’s real wishes for her funeral and other family secrets, along with flashes of laughter and moments of joy.
We stay in this emotional family morass, or cocoon, depending upon it how it feels to us, until the Moon enters Leo on Sunday morning. The stars encourage us to look ahead, dally with friends, travel, or sneak off to catch up with our work. Mercury is in industrious Capricorn as it forms a semi-square to Saturn on Sunday and early next week, and our responsibilities begin to nag us. It may feel very satisfying to build something assembled the train set or work on the household projects.
Just remember that while the Moon is in sociable Leo, friends and family will get easily miffed if we do not give them the attention they deserve. If beloveds are acting out, it’s a good time to practice some basic dog training skills, withhold attention briefly when people are misbehaving, catch them doing something right and poor positive energy like maple syrup on pancakes.
If our beloveds try to sneak away to work, let’s entertain ourselves and forgive them their industriousness. We can let them know when we specifically need their time; they’ll be so much more willing to give it once they deal with their concerns. This pattern of internal distraction intensifies on Tuesday as Mercury squares Mars and can leave us truly irritable and somewhat accident prone, and if cornered or pressured, we will snap back.
We may need moments of solitude laced through this holiday season, a walk by ourselves or time on our computer to bring our antennae in and refill our wells while Venus is in Scorpio. Jealousy or possessiveness can show up at the strangest times, we can acknowledge these feelings and hold ourselves gently without letting them run the show. Let everybody go to neutral corners when they need to without harassment and the time together will be more rich and pleasant.
Venus enters Sagittarius for the last few days of the year and can bring a trace of enthusiasm and playfulness that was missing from most of December. Now is the time to go cross-country skiing, travel, or connect with people from faraway places. The Moon enters sociable Libra right before midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Thoughtful Mercury remains in serious Capricorn throughout the week, though it’s pulling away from last week’s fatalistic Mercury-Pluto conjunction. The Sun heads towards a conjunction with Pluto early in January, reminding us to pick back up all of the world’s woes and work to make progress in the new year.

Tuesday, December 29: Walk in a winter wonderland; as the Sun sextiles Neptune, we’d rather be walking in our fantasies than grappling here on earth, but may need to find time for both. Let’s roll with it, make the best of our New Year’s Eve, forget about doing anything perfectly and enjoy the lightening of the mood close to midnight as the Moon enters sociable Libra. Bring the talk around to how the new year can be more Libra- more beautiful , fair, equitable, just, balanced, and romantic.
