Review by Diane Saarinen
I was intrigued from the start when I heard about Joanna Powell Colbert’s new venture: The Gaian Soul Grove, a place for online learning and connection with like-minded others with a decidedly nature-centered focus. I had recently reviewed Powell Colbert’s Gaian Tarot (review in New Age Journal here: https://newagejournal.com/2007/gaian-tarot) and found it to contain a quiet earthy wisdom. I wanted to learn more about the practices that influenced this luminous tarot deck.
Signing up for the MidWinter course, I didn’t know exactly what to expect. Powell Colbert wrote we’d be joining her in a “practice of creativity, contemplation, and connection during the Midwinter holiday season…We all deserve to carve out time for ourselves, to nurture our spirits and our creative self-expression!” The course was divided up into five sections, one a week, starting shortly before Yule and ending a few weeks before the next seasonal holiday, which is Candlemas (February 2nd). In this way, we were encouraged to explore the “tide” of each season.
Videos presenting the teaching material were offered, but if you have a different learning style, the written lessons were provided as well. A lively forum of class participants discussed the practices each week. And as a participant, you had a choice regarding what exploration you’d be undertaking for the week. Nature practices were offered; so are ways to express art from this talented visual artist.
I found the program to be contemplative, thought provoking and instructive at the same time. I had no idea I would gravitate to the art lessons Powell Colbert provided – drawing has never been one of my strengths. But I found myself making vision board collages, and even drawing on altered photographs. Something I would never even have thought of on my own!
Powell Colbert has a lovely method of teaching with a writing style that truly stirs the soul. At times urging goal-oriented activities, at times calling for winter-style hibernation, this is a teacher who walks the talk. A satisfying seasonal exploration that I enjoyed so much, I’m signing up for the next cycle – which is timed for Candlemas.
