Interview with Joe H. Slate by Melanie Marquis

Slate has blurred the boundaries between science and science fiction with his research into paranormal phenomenon, and his new book is full of fascinating lab studies that provide solid insight into the psychic realms. With this groundbreaking book coming out this fall, it was time to catch up with Slate to find out just what Psychic Empowerment for Everyone is all about.

You’re the founder of the International Paranormal Research Foundation. Tell me about this organization.

Slate: The Foundation was established at Athens State University in 1970 to promote the study parapsychology. It established an experimental laboratory and conducted research projects funded by the U. S. Army, the Parapsychology Foundation of New York, and numerous private sources. It introduced parapsychology into the university curriculum, a first for the State of Alabama.

Did you have any paranormal or psychic experiences in childhood that helped shape your interest in these subjects?

Slate: As a boy growing up on a farm in rural Alabama, I had numerous psychic experiences that not only shaped my interest in the paranormal but also enriched my life with a deeper understanding of my existence. Among the earliest was an out-of-body experience in which I traveled to distant planes to experience a totally new dimension of reality. During that experience, I interacted with multiple planes of color spread across the horizon like cirrus clouds at sunset. It was a breakthrough experience in which I felt a total oneness with the universe and all the forces underlying it.

You co-authored Psychic Empowerment for Everyone with Carl “Llewellyn” Weschcke, a true icon of the New Age and alternative spirituality movements. How did that come about?

Slate: I’ve always admired Carl for his groundbreaking contributions to the study of the paranormal. When I finished my recent book, Connecting to the Power of Nature, he suggested a few topics for my next writing project.  I at once knew that we could become co-authors. I invited him and he graciously accepted. Working with Carl as a co-author has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I’ve found his brilliance and creativity are simply unmatched.

Psychic Empowerment for Everyone comes out this November. What exactly is psychic empowerment?

Joe H. Slate: Psychic empowerment is a three dimensional concept that includes discovery, development, and application. Once you discover your psychic potentials, the challenge is to develop them to their fullest and apply them to enrich your life while contributing to the greater good. Through psychic empowerment, you can reach your highest destiny while making the world a better place for present and future generations.

What can psychic empowerment do for a person?

Slate: The possibilities are unlimited. Through psychic empowerment, we can gain knowledge not otherwise available to us. Knowledge is power, and knowledge of psychic origin is power in its purest form. Better health and fitness, slowing the aging process, enriching your social relationships, promoting career success, accelerating intellectual development, improving memory, building self-esteem, resolving conflicts, breaking unwanted habits, increasing creativity, and overcoming blockages to your growth are all possible when you become psychically empowered. On a much larger scale, we can promote the evolvement of the globe by more effectively solving such problems as environmental pollution, world hunger, disease, and war.

Your book offers a 7-day plan anyone can use to achieve psychic empowerment. Can you describe an exercise a person can do right now to begin increasing their psychic skills?

Slate: Take a few moments to settle back and with your eyes closed, allow peaceful, relaxing images to form in your mind, perhaps a fluffy cloud drifting slowly against a clear blue sky, a golden sunset at sea, or a tranquil moonlit cove. Tell yourself, ‘I am at complete peace. All I need to know is now available to me.’ Conclude the exercise by allowing images of psychic significance to form in your mind. In a matter of moments, you have reduced stress, increased relaxation, and generated empowering images of psychic significance.

Where will psychic empowerment ultimately take humanity?

Slate: We are each a work in progress. From a psychic empowerment perspective, perfection, rather than a finished product, can be best defined as continuous development. We are achieving perfection moment by moment as we develop our growth potentials.
